Crews battle fire at abandoned Ferndale home; police officer transported

Several area crews battled a fire Saturday evening at an abandoned home in Ferndale Borough.

Officials say the fire broke out just before 6 p.m. Saturday at a home along the 500 block of Vickroy Ave.

According to Upper Yoder Township police chief Donald Hess, one officer was transported for treatment of smoke inhalation after rushing into a neighboring home when the flames began to spread.

The officer was treated at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center and is now doing fine.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire at the abandoned duplex and a state police fire marshal was called in to assist.

Crews from West Hills, Upper Yoder, Riverside, Cover Hill, Johnstown, Richland and Lower Yoder were all on scene.
