Local first responders train for railroad incidents aboard Norfolk Southern safety train

Members from the City of Altoona Fire Department and local emergency management agencies went aboard Norfolk Southern’s safety train in Altoona on Tuesday. They say that because of the mainline railroad that runs through Altoona and Blair County, this type of training is very important to them. “There’s a lot of train traffic that comes through here, so it’s really important for us that we’re building those relationships with first responders and that the first responders here, for one thing, are familiar with our equipment and get the chance to train as they would for a kind of house fire or vehicle incident,” said Norfolk Sourthern’s senior communications manager Heather Garcia. Man, 70, accused of groping girl with ice cube during Altoona Curve game, police say

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Logan Township Police Department say a 70-year-old Martinsburg man is facing charges after he allegedly groped a female juvenile during an Altoona Curve game this summer. Police say the incident occurred on the evening of August 12th when Calvin Zook reportedly "pinned" the girl against a food service counter and "rubbed an ice cube against her bare leg and buttocks area." Investigators say Zook was reportedly working at People's Natural Gas Field that night as a volunteer. Read More...

Somerset Humane Society reaches capacity, no longer accepting any animals at this time

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — For the first time, officials at the Humane Society of Somerset County say they are currently not taking in any more animals. This is due to what they call “an alarming rise in animals coming through the door.” They say the issue is made worse by low staffing which makes it difficult to care for the animals.
